Job Summary
Performs phlebotomy related tasks in a physician office setting.

- The ability to consistently lift, push or pull loads of up to fifty (50) pounds. (Unless nursing 50)

Working Conditions Primarily Works in a well-lighted and air-conditioned environment with period of heavy workload and stress. This role may include working in less-than-ideal home conditions, which can include exposure to extreme temperatures and environments that may not meet typical cleanliness standards such as clutter, unkept surfaces, and homes with pets. Works in various conditions.

Responsibilities Supervises the Following Positions Positions: N/A
Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions - Greets patients and internal/external customers in a professional, customer-service oriented manner by explaining procedures and assures patient confidentiality.
- Uses proper methods to verify patient information and label tubes as needed following lab protocols.
- Minimize waiting time for patients as much as possible.
- Anticipates unusual reaction of patient to any procedure.
- Performs vein-punctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks to collect proper specimens from patients.
- Insures the proper transfer of all specimens in accordance with laboratory and infection control procedures.
- Maintains supplies in phlebotomy area and collection trays.
- Explains take home collection procedures to patients in a clear and concise manner.
- Maintains laboratory logs and keeps track of laboratory results coming in from reference labs, assuring we receive all of the results in a timely manner.
- Receive lab/x-ray order requisitions from staff and makes sure they are filled out completely and correctly with name, date of birth, EMR number, tests/procedures to be done, doctor name, and diagnosis.
- Prepares requisitions to be sent to billing department.
- Uses basic mathematics to tally workload counts, checks monthly laboratory billing for accuracy.
- Performs standard screens and transfer all calls, take complete messages, place calls as directed.
- Explain credit policy, indicate chart location, explain credit policy to new patients, refer bad credit or overdue account to credit department.
- Schedule all appointments at physician/nurse direction.
- Verify patient information, notify nurse of patient arrival, note time of arrival on fee ticket.
- Work with lab manager on any activity requiring assistance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education
- Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
Experience:
- Required
- Knowledge of Medical Laboratory practices and procedures
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology
- Knowledge of Lab/reference manuals, formularies, ICD-9 book, and reference lab procedures
Certification/Licensure:
- Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Must obtain within ninety (90) days of start date
- Preferred
- ASCP Board of Registry or equivalent
