Duties

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Evaluates, identifies, collects and preserves crime scene evidence to aid in the prosecution of criminals;
  • Conducts visual and physical analysis and comparison of crime scene latent prints to national fingerprint databases;
  • Develops, classifies and files latent fingerprints;
  • Collects, preserves, logs and secures evidence;
  • Documents all handling of evidence and property;
  • Maintains activity logs and generates reports as needed.
  • Receives property and evidence from law enforcement officers for testing and analysis;
  • Assists with the identification of evidence at crime scenes;
  • Enter firearm evidence into NIBIN;
  • Provides in-service training of officers on collection of evidence at crime scenes;
  • Prepares necessary documentation and evidence for court;
  • Transports evidence for court proceedings;
  • May be required to testify in court;
  • Assists in maintenance of crime laboratory and evidence processing equipment;
  • Orders supplies as needed, and maintains inventory of forensic supplies for Department;
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, -AND- two (2) year’s technical experience in police identification methods, crime scene processing, and photography;
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Arizona Drivers License;
  • Will be required to obtain and maintain NIBIN Certification.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
  • City policies and procedures.
  • Basic fingerprint classification and latent fingerprint development methods.
  • Rules for the collecting, preserving and securing of physical evidence.
  • The principles and practices of crime scene photography, and the operation of a variety of photographic equipment.
  • Chemicals, powders, solutions and equipment used in the development and analysis of latent fingerprints.
  • The principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Packaging and organizing numerous items of evidence in an orderly fashion for storage and retrieval.
  • Maintaining accurate evidence records and generating special and periodic reports.
  • Photographing crime scenes.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of technical and imaging software.
  • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • Crime laboratory environment, and at crime scene's as needed.
