Coder – Health Information Management

Memorial Hospital – Chester, IL

Memorial Hospital is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated AHIMA/AAPC Certified Coder to join our Health Information Management (HIM) team. This is a full-time position offering a comprehensive benefits package, a supportive work environment, and the opportunity to contribute to high-quality patient care through accurate clinical documentation and coding integrity.

About the Role

The Coder is responsible for accurately coding and abstracting patient encounters across inpatient, outpatient, and clinic services. This role plays a key part in ensuring proper reimbursement, regulatory compliance, clinical documentation quality, and data integrity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Code and abstract diagnostic and procedural information for all patient encounters.

  • Research and analyze data needs to ensure accurate reimbursement.

  • Identify documentation deficiencies and verify that documentation supports services rendered.

  • Audit clinical documentation and coded data for quality and accuracy.

  • Serve as a coding resource and consultant to clinical staff.

  • Assist with training, orientation, and mentorship of coding staff.

  • Perform diagnosis and procedural coding (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS).

  • Conduct charge audits and documentation reviews as needed.

  • Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, payer policies, CMS requirements, and hospital regulations.

  • Utilize physician query guidelines when clarification is needed.

  • Participate in performance improvement and special projects.

  • Complete Trauma Registry duties as assigned.

  • other duties as assigned by Manager.

Qualifications

Required:

  • AHIMA or AAPC Coding Certification (e.g., CCS, CPC, RHIT, RHIA, etc.)

  • Experience with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II

  • Experience coding inpatient, outpatient, or Rural Health Clinic/Pro Fee encounters preferred

  • Strong anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology knowledge

  • Excellent typing, 10-key, and data entry accuracy

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills

  • Ability to work independently and maintain strict confidentiality

  • Vaccinations per IDPH, CDC and CMS.

Preferred:

  • Rural Health – Billing & Coding Specialist (RH-CBS)

  • Community Health – Billing & Coding Specialist (CH-CBS)

Performance Expectations
  • Demonstrate full competency in position duties within 90 days of hire.

  • Maintain ongoing proficiency and adherence to coding conventions, CMS guidelines, and hospital policies.

  • Ensure compliance with confidentiality, patient privacy, and safety standards.

  • Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with accuracy and attention to detail.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Prolonged sitting with occasional standing, bending, or lifting up to 35 lbs.

  • Manual dexterity for office equipment including keyboard, copier, fax, and phone.

  • Strong critical thinking and judgment skills in a variable workflow environment.
