Job Description

The Advertising & Marketing Assistant position is an entry-level, full-time position that reports to the Advertising & Marketing Director. The primary goal of this position is to assist the Advertising & Marketing Department, which—among other things—ensures that literary magazines, presses, conferences, and organizations can promote their books and programs to the poets and poetry readers who rely on the Academy of American Poets for information. The Academy of American Poets produces Poets.org, Poem-a-Day, American Poets magazine, and National Poetry Month, among other programs and publications. 

Duties include: 

  • Review and complete tasks as assigned 
  • Design visual assets to help promote the Academy’s programs and announcements on social media and in its newsletters
  • Design house ads for American Poets magazine, Poets.org, and the Academy’s newsletters to help promote the Academy’s programs and announcements
  • Assist with designing ads for advertisers and National Poetry Month sponsors that have limited design experience 
  • Assist with scheduling, collecting, and placing online and print advertisements
  • Assist with press releases and other materials for earned media, including publishing releases on Poets.org and helping to circulate certain releases to media outlets
  • Facilitate media coverage of Poem-a-Day guest editors 
  • Assist with the renewal of existing advertisers from previous fiscal years
  • Research new prospective advertisers and send pitches
  • Send advertising pitches for Poets.org, Poem-a-Day, the Academy Newsletter, the Educator Newsletter, Teach This Poem, and the seasonal books “round-ups (7 annually) and follow up on pitches three to five times
  • Assist with the renewal of National Poetry Month sponsors from previous fiscal years
  • Research new prospective National Poetry Month sponsors
  • Ensure National Poetry Month sponsors’ benefits are fulfilled within the calendar year of sponsorship 
  • Invoice advertisers and National Poetry Month sponsors 
  • Build seasonal round-ups in Mailchimp and online 
  • Draft social media copy and schedule posts to help promote the round-ups
  • Add partner, sponsor, and advertiser events to the Poetry Near You calendar 
  • Select an event from the Poetry Near You calendar each week to spotlight on social media and in the Academy Newsletter (the #PoetryNearYou “Pick of the Week”)
  • Assist with preparing shipments to the AWP Conference, the Brooklyn Book Festival, the NCTE Convention, and other in-person conferences
  • Collect press clips for the Executive Director to use in meetings with the Board of Directors
  • Post Academy updates and events on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram)
  • Reconcile payments received through PayPal 
  • Other duties as assigned

Commitments and Competencies:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, Google applications, and email communication platforms
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram) 
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop
  • Experience with Mailchimp and Campaign Monitor a plus
  • Experience with DoubleClick for Publishers a plus
  • Excellent organizational, communication, writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Goals driven
  • Collaborative style and a sense of humor
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 1 year of job experience
  • A passion for poetry; familiarity with the poetry community a plus 

Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $43,000 to $45,000 based on experience.
